They may become more manageable with better gear (I've only been playing for a week), but they were designed to played by more than one person. Have you tried playing the main missions alone? They're damn near impossible to pull off by yourself as you're swarmed by enemies at every turn if you want any chance of beating them, you have to search for other players before stepping in.

Yes, but all of those points have been true of literally every other MMO ever, so why is it an issue when Ubisoft does it with The Division? In Guild Wars, WoW, etc., you don't need to join any other players to play the main missions (you have that option, and it's a damn sight easier, but it's not a requirement) and hosting private servers have always been a hassle for the very reasons you state, so I'm not really sure what your point is.
